Target Information
Calnexin, also referred to as IP90, p88, and p90, is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER.
Soluble ER resident proteins such as GRP78, GRP94, and protein disulfide isomerase contain the KDEL sequence for ER retention, whereas integral membrane proteins like calnexin lack this sequence but have positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER localization.
Calnexin structure includes:
- ER luminal domain (461 amino acids)
- Transmembrane segment (22 amino acids)
- Cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids)
