Target Information
The CNGA1 gene encodes a protein involved in phototransduction. Together with another protein, it forms a cGMP-gated cation channel in the plasma membrane, facilitating depolarization of rod photoreceptors. This process represents the final step of the phototransduction pathway.
Defects in CNGA1 cause autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP).
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms are known.
