Target Information
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids (24 kDa). CRP is produced by the liver and its plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammation. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds nuclear components (chromatin, histones), and plays a key role in innate immunity. CRP acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may function as a scavenger during cell necrosis. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
