Target Information
Islet, or insulinoma, amyloid polypeptide is commonly found in pancreatic islets of patients suffering from type II diabetes mellitus or harboring an insulinoma. Although the association of amylin with type II diabetes has long been recognized, its direct causative role remains under investigation. Studies suggest that amylin, similar to beta-amyloid (Abeta) involved in Alzheimer’s disease, can induce apoptotic cell death in certain cultured cells, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of type II diabetes.
