Target Information

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein that plays a key role in targeting cellular proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor protein, either as polyubiquitin chains or as a single ubiquitin fused to another protein. The gene encodes a fusion protein consisting of ubiquitin at the N-terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C-terminus. Post-translational processing generates free ubiquitin monomer and ribosomal protein S27a. Ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit, contains C4-type zinc finger domains and is located in the cytoplasm. Pseudogenes derived from this gene exist in the genome. Similar fusion proteins include ribosomal proteins L40 and S30, which are synthesized with ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins.
