Target Information
CD49f (Integrin alpha-6, ITGA6) is an integrin alpha chain protein. Integrins are integral cell-surface proteins composed of alpha and beta chains that combine to form various integrins. For example, alpha 6 may pair with beta 4 (TSP180) or beta 1 (VLA-6).
They play roles in cell adhesion and cell-surface mediated signaling. Integrins interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and mediate intracellular signals affecting cell shape, mobility, and cell cycle progression.
CD49f is predominantly expressed by epithelial cells and contributes structurally to hemidesmosomes.
More than 18 alpha and 8 beta subunits with numerous splice variants exist in mammals. Certain integrins also bind to soluble ligands or counter-receptors on adjacent cells (e.g., ICAMs), promoting cell aggregation.
