Target Information
Cells respond to environmental stress by increasing expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs).
HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1, also known as HSP27) acts as a molecular chaperone, maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state.
It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins.
Mutations in HSPB1 may result in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
