Tryptone Bile Glucuronic Agar

Tryptone Bile Glucuronic Agar is a selective agar designed for the detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli in foodstuffs, animal feed, and water samples.
It effectively differentiates most E. coli strains from other coliform bacteria.

The medium contains the chromogenic substrate 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-glucuronide, which is absorbed by E. coli.
The enzyme β-glucuronidase hydrolyzes the bond between the chromophore (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl) and β-D-glucuronide, resulting in blue-green colored colonies characteristic of E. coli.
