Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of enzymes involved in extracellular matrix degradation. Of the sixteen known members, ten exist in soluble form, whereas membrane-type MMPs (MT-MMPs) are integral membrane proteins. MT1-MMP (MMP14), MT2-MMP (MMP15), and MT3-MMP (MMP16) contain a C-terminal transmembrane domain anchoring them to the cell surface and possess an 8-amino acid insert in their catalytic domain.
MT1-MMP cleaves progelatinase A (MMP-2) and progelatinase B into their active forms. MT2-MMP plays a minor role in activating pro-MMP-2 in breast carcinomas, and coexpression of MT1-MMP and MT2-MMP in advanced breast carcinoma stages suggests possible involvement of MT2-MMP in metastasis.
