Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, similar to the gene products of Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans Sma.
SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
SMAD1 mediates signals of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses.
Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated by BMP receptor kinase and forms a complex with SMAD4, regulating transcription.
It is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
