Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on many stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker and may act as a receptor regulating adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors.
Functions and Characteristics:
- Involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis
- Regulates hematopoietic cell adhesion and proliferation
- May function as an adhesion molecule for stem cell attachment to the bone marrow matrix
- Possible role in presenting carbohydrate ligands to selectins
- Intracellular chain is phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
