Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in mammalian tissues.
CA IX is one of the most hypoxia-inducible genes due to its stability and membrane localization. Carbonic anhydrases play a key role in pH regulation by controlling hydrogen ion (H⁺) flux. Under hypoxic conditions, inhibition of CA IX increases cell death, making CA IX a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
