Target Information

Opsins are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. In addition to visual opsins, mammals possess several non-visual opsins expressed in extraocular tissues.
Opsin 3 is strongly expressed in brain and testis, weakly in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas.
It may also be expressed in the retina. The protein has canonical features of a photoreceptive opsin and may play a role in encephalic photoreception.
Highly expressed in the preoptic area and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, and shows patterned expression in selected brain regions including cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and spinal interneurons.
