Target Information
The NMDA Receptor (NMDAR) plays an essential role in memory and neuronal development. It is implicated in several central nervous system disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and ischemic neuronal cell death. The NMDA receptor is also a principal molecular target for alcohol in the CNS and is potentiated by protein phosphorylation. The NR1 protein can form NMDA-activated channels when expressed in Xenopus oocytes, but the currents are smaller than those observed in situ. Channels with more physiological characteristics are produced when the NR1 subunit combines with one or more of the NMDAR2 (NR2 A-D) subunits.
