Target Information
The genus Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, consisting of Gram-negative, facultative, motile bacilli.
They possess three major surface antigens:
- H (flagellar) antigen – phase 1 and 2
- O (somatic) antigen – part of the LPS moiety
- Vi (capsular) antigen – referred to as K in other Enterobacteriaceae
Salmonellae also contain LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of an O polysaccharide (O antigen), an R core, and the inner Lipid A.
Endotoxins can induce fever and activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
