Target Information
The genus Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. It consists of Gram-negative, facultative, motile bacilli possessing three major surface antigens:
- H (flagellar) antigen – phase 1 and 2
- O (somatic) antigen – part of the LPS moiety
- Vi (capsular) antigen – referred to as K in other Enterobacteriaceae
Salmonellae possess LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of O polysaccharide (O antigen), R core, and inner Lipid A. Endotoxins induce fever and can activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
