- Specificity: Salmonella (Y).
Target Information
The genus Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. These are Gram-negative, facultative, motile bacilli with flagella.
They possess three major surface antigens:
- H (flagellar) antigen (phase 1 and 2)
- O (somatic) antigen (part of LPS)
- Vi (capsular) antigen (also known as K antigen in other Enterobacteriaceae)
Salmonellae have LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of an O polysaccharide, an R core, and an inner Lipid A region.
Endotoxins can induce fever and activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
