Target Information

The membrane-associated protein encoded by ABCB4 is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes.
ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance and antigen presentation.
The gene encodes a full transporter and member of the p-glycoprotein family of membrane proteins with phosphatidylcholine as its substrate.
Although the exact function is not fully determined, it may be involved in the transport of phospholipids from liver hepatocytes into bile.
Alternative splicing of this gene results in several products of undetermined function.
