Cadherins are a family of Ca²⁺-dependent adhesion molecules that mediate cell-cell binding, essential for maintaining tissue structure and morphogenesis.
Cadherin-16 (Ksp-Cadherin) is a type I membrane protein expressed specifically in the basolateral membrane of renal tubular epithelial cells, serving as a kidney-specific marker.
The human Cadherin-16 gene maps to chromosome 16q21–16q22, while the mouse homolog is located on distal chromosome 8.
