Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. These proteins are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMPs were initially identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a key role in bone formation and its reduced expression is linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region produces three variants encoding an identical protein.
