Target Information
CDK8 phosphorylates the carboxy-terminal domain of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II. This protein is coexpressed and copurified with Cyclin C. CDK8 belongs to the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) family, which plays a key role in cell cycle regulation. The prototype members, p34/Cdc2 and Cdk2, function late in the cycle, while Cdk4 and Cdk6 are involved in G1 to S progression. Analogous to yeast Cdk8, human Cdk8–Cyclin C may interact with RNA polymerase II, influencing transcription mechanisms that lead to cell division.
