The GSTA1 gene encodes an enzyme involved in conjugating glutathione to electrophilic compounds such as carcinogens, drugs, toxins, and oxidative stress products. This detoxification process protects cells from reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation products. Genetic polymorphisms in GSTA1 affect drug metabolism efficiency. The gene is part of a cluster on chromosome 6 and has multiple transcript variants due to alternative splicing.
