Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. Several isoforms exist, differing in structure and localization.
GPx1 (cytosolic/mitochondrial) is a selenium-dependent enzyme, the first discovered in the GPx family. GPx2 is expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium, GPx3 is a plasma form released by the kidney, and GPx4 reduces hydroperoxides in membranes and lipoproteins.
All mammalian GPx family members, except Cys-containing GPx3 and GPx5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
