Target Information

PEDF (Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein produced and secreted in many tissues throughout the body. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2. It also provides neuroprotection by suppressing neuronal apoptosis caused by oxidative or excitotoxic stress.

PEDF binds to its receptor PEDF-R, a lipase-linked cell membrane receptor, which facilitates signaling and functional studies. Due to its multifunctional properties, PEDF is a potential therapeutic target for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and other angiogenesis-related diseases, including certain cancers.
