Target Information

Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a key role in regulating tight junction localization and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, increasing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue—high in brain tissue at cell-cell junctions and lower in non-neural tissues. Structural features of occludin are conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin and other tight junction proteins contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelial junctions, leading to brain tumor edema.
