Target Information
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity and an RNA template component.
Telomerase expression is normally repressed in somatic cells, leading to telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Dysregulation of telomerase may contribute to oncogenesis. Mouse studies suggest telomerase also aids chromosomal repair via de novo telomere synthesis.
Alternative splicing of the TERT gene produces multiple isoforms, some with undetermined full-length sequences, and serves as a regulatory mechanism of telomerase activity.
