MAP2K1 (MEK1) kinase is a dual-specificity protein kinase functioning in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades, regulating cell growth and differentiation.
It is activated by various growth factors, cytokines, membrane depolarization, and calcium influx.
Phosphorylation of Ser218 and Ser222 by Raf1 activates MEK1.
This protein is involved in stress response, apoptosis, and cytokine-induced proliferation.
Mutations in MAP2K1 can cause cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome.
