Target Information

The WRN gene encodes a member of the RecQ and DEAH subfamilies of DNA/RNA helicases. These helicases are involved in transcription, replication, recombination, and repair. The WRN protein contains a nuclear localization signal in the C-terminus and localizes predominantly to the nucleolus. It exhibits intrinsic 3′ to 5′ DNA helicase and exonuclease activities. Interaction with Ku70/80 suggests involvement in double-strand DNA break repair. Mutations in this gene cause Werner syndrome, a disorder characterized by premature aging.
