Target Information
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations of the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance factor (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of all CF cases involve a deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), resulting in abnormal chloride transport. Despite its lethality, CF remains prevalent. One hypothesis suggests that Salmonella typhi utilizes CFTR to enter intestinal epithelial cells, and ΔF508 heterozygote and homozygote mice show 86% and 100% reductions in S. typhi intestinal submucosal uptake.
