Target Information
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of CF cases involve deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), leading to defective chloride transport.
This mutation often results in severe lung and liver disease. Interestingly, CFTR also serves as an entry point for Salmonella typhi into intestinal epithelial cells, and studies show ΔF508 heterozygote and homozygote mice exhibit 86% and 100% reductions, respectively, in S. typhi intestinal submucosal uptake.
