Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor suggested to function as a presynaptic autoreceptor that inhibits acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor also mediates smooth muscle contractility. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), selective loss of M2 subtype receptors occurs in cortical and hippocampal regions. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been associated with depression in women. The M2 receptor is expressed in various brain regions including cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, thalamus, and in lung and prostate.
