Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin is implicated in paracrine signaling and type 2 diabetes.
Studies show that obese, diabetic mice exhibit elevated serum resistin levels, which antagonize insulin activity and contribute to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha, and coactivators CBP and p300 acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, facilitating transcription. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
