Calcitonin is a 32-amino-acid peptide localized in the C cells of normal and hyperplastic thyroid tissue.
Staining for calcitonin aids in identifying C-cell proliferative abnormalities, including C-cell hyperplasia and invasive tumors.
In medullary thyroid carcinoma, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits may exhibit variable calcitonin activity.
