Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide localized in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid.
Staining for calcitonin is useful for identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities, including hyperplasia and invasive tumors.
In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits may exhibit varying degrees of calcitonin activity.
