Target Information
Blood vessel epicardial substance (BVES), also known as Popeye protein 1, is a transmembrane protein involved in cell-cell interactions and adhesion, particularly at tight junctions.
BVES consists of an extracellular amino-terminus, three transmembrane domains, and a cytoplasmic carboxyl-terminus.
It is expressed in the developing coronary vascular system, including the proepicardium, migrating epithelial epicardium, delaminated vasculogenic mesenchyme, and vascular smooth muscle cells.
BVES functions in directing the development of heart, epithelial, and muscle cells during embryogenesis and accumulates at cell-cell contact points, such as filopodia and cell borders, promoting adhesion prior to E-cadherin arrival.
