ALK 유전자의 돌연변이, 재배열 및 증폭은 다양한 종양(예: 미분화 대세포 림프종, 신경모세포종, 비소세포 폐암)에서 발견됩니다.
염색체 재배열로 인해 ALK와 NPM 유전자가 융합된 NPM-ALK 융합 유전자가 형성되며, 이 융합 단백질은 종양유발성을 갖습니다.
