Serine/threonine-protein kinase component of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC), a key regulator of mitosis. The CPC ensures correct chromosome alignment and segregation, chromatin-induced microtubule stabilization, and spindle assembly. It is essential for cytokinesis, central spindle assembly, and cleavage furrow formation. The complex phosphorylates multiple substrates including BIRC5, CDCA8, INCENP, CENPA, and histone H3, contributing to mitotic progression and checkpoint regulation. AURKB also regulates p53 transcriptional activity and is vital for kinetochore localization of BUB1 and SGOL1.
