Target Information
ApoE belongs to a group of proteins that bind reversibly with lipoprotein and play an important role in lipid metabolism.
These proteins help solubilize lipids, maintain lipoprotein structural integrity, act as ligands for lipoprotein receptors, and regulate enzymes involved in lipid metabolism.
ApoE is produced mainly in the liver and brain, and also in other organs.
It is a key component of all plasma lipoproteins and mediates uptake of chylomicron remnants via ApoE receptors and LDL receptors (apo B/E).
Defects in ApoE can cause hyperlipoproteinemia type III.
ApoE has three major isoforms: E2, E3, and E4, differing by a single amino acid substitution.
Compared to E3 and E4, E2 has the lowest receptor binding affinity and is associated with lower total cholesterol and LDL levels, but higher ApoE levels.
