Target Information

Signal-mediated nuclear import and export occur through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), composed of ~50 unique proteins known as nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin (NUP98) is produced via proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor, yielding both 98 kDa and 96 kDa nucleoporins localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC.
Rat studies indicate that NUP98 functions as a docking site for transport substrates. The human NUP98 gene can fuse with other genes in chromosome translocations associated with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (T-ALL).
This gene resides within the imprinted 11p15.5 tumor-suppressor region, linked to Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and various cancers (lung, ovarian, breast).
Alternative splicing produces several transcript variants, not all of which have been fully characterized.
