Target Information

iNOS (Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase) is an enzyme that produces nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity.
NO synthesis is mediated by NOS family members, including:

• nNOS (type I) – neuronal NOS
• eNOS (type III) – endothelial NOS
• iNOS (type II) – inducible NOS

iNOS is expressed in liver and inducible by lipopolysaccharides and cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF, IL-1, IL-2).
It catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to L-citrulline and NO, containing calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
Found in macrophages, hepatocytes, synoviocytes, and smooth muscle cells.
Cytokine induction leads to increased iNOS mRNA, protein, and activity, resulting in sustained NO production.
Dysfunction of iNOS is associated with diseases such as achalasia and impotence.
