Target Information

Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein initially identified as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and acts as a ligand for α(V)β(3) and α(V)β(5) integrins.
Periostin functions as a cell adhesion molecule in preosteoblasts, playing roles in osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment. It is mainly detected in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, but is up-regulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer.
Expression is increased by BMP2 and TGF-β1. The protein includes a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
