Target Information
AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene also linked to colon cancer and melanoma. The AXL protein is a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces extracellular signals into the cytoplasm by binding growth factors such as GAS6, contributing to cell proliferation.
TAM receptors, including AXL, are involved in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Mice lacking all three TAM receptors exhibit degenerative phenotypes and autoimmune symptoms similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
Axl may act as an entry receptor for filoviruses and serves as a marker for Siglec 6+/Axl+ dendritic cells. Its expression can be upregulated by TLR ligands like LPS or poly I:C. Soluble Axl, produced by proteolytic cleavage, may indicate inflammation or cancer when elevated in plasma.
