The WNT gene family encodes secreted signaling proteins involved in oncogenesis and various developmental processes, including regulation of cell fate and patterning during embryogenesis.
The WNT16 gene produces two transcript variants from separate promoters:
- Variant 1: Expressed ubiquitously, with highest levels in adult kidney, placenta, brain, heart, and spleen.
- Variant 2: Expressed mainly in the pancreas.
WNT16 acts as a ligand for members of the frizzled family of seven transmembrane receptors.
