It catalyzes the synthesis of xanthine monophosphate (XMP) from inosine-5'-monophosphate (IMP), the rate-limiting step in de novo guanine nucleotide synthesis.
Defects in this gene are associated with retinitis pigmentosa type 10 (RP10).
