Target Information
Beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins) are among the most frequently used antimicrobial agents, all sharing a core beta-lactam ring structure. Bacterial resistance to these agents has increased due to beta-lactamase production, which hydrolyzes the beta-lactam bond, neutralizing antibacterial activity. TEM-type and SHV-type beta-lactamases often contain point mutations that broaden substrate specificity, contributing to multidrug resistance in many Gram-negative pathogens.
