Target Information
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine important for:
- Proliferation of activated T cells
- Differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages
IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7.
The expression of the IL-2 gene in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, representing an unusual regulatory mode for precise gene expression.
Disruption of an IL-2-like gene in mice leads to ulcerative colitis-like disease, indicating its essential role in immune response to antigenic stimuli.
