Target Information
MaxiK channels are large conductance, voltage and calcium-sensitive potassium channels that play a key role in controlling smooth muscle tone and neuronal excitability. These channels are composed of two subunits: the pore-forming alpha subunit and the modulatory beta subunit. The BK Beta3a protein is an auxiliary beta subunit that may partially inactivate or slightly decrease the activation time of MaxiK alpha subunit currents. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 22.
