Target Information
The Ras-related superfamily of guanine nucleotide binding proteins includes the R-Ras, Rap, Ral/Rec, and Rho/Rab subfamilies. Rab proteins play an important role in endocytosis and biosynthetic protein transport. Transport of newly synthesized proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to Golgi stacks and secretory vesicles requires Rab protein function. Rab proteins are also integral to endocytic pathways.
Rab23 (also known as HSPC137) is a 237 amino acid member of the Rab family that localizes to the cytoplasmic side of the cell membrane. It is involved in intracellular protein transport and GTPase-mediated signal transduction. Mutations in the Rab23 gene are associated with Carpenter syndrome (ACPS2), characterized by obesity, cardiac defects, polysyndactyly, and craniosynostosis.
