Target Information
Opsins are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. In addition to visual opsins, mammals possess several non-visual opsins expressed in extraocular tissues. Opsin 3 is strongly expressed in brain and testis, and weakly in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas. It may also be expressed in the retina. The protein has canonical photoreceptive opsin features and may play a role in encephalic photoreception. Strong expression in the brain, particularly in the preoptic area and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Shows patterned expression in the cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and interneurons in the spinal cord.
