Beta-catenin은 세포 간 접착 구조(adherens junction, AJ)의 구성 요소로서, 세포 성장 및 접착 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
E-cadherin과 상호작용하여 세포골격의 actin과 연결되며, 다양한 신호전달 경로(tyrosine kinase, phosphatase, Wnt/Wingless 등)에 관여합니다.
Beta-catenin은 모낭세포, 기저세포, 외부 및 내부 뿌리초 세포 등에서 발현되며, 여러 종양(예: pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer 등)과 관련이 있습니다.
핵 내에서는 Lef/Tcf 전사인자와 함께 cyclin D, c-myc 등의 유전자 발현을 촉진하여 세포 증식을 유도합니다. 이러한 기능은 종양 발생과 관련된 분자적 기초를 제공합니다.
